It may be the most unusual welcome of a new music director ever in Cincinnati.

Eckart Preu’s inaugural concert as the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra’s fifth music director on Saturday night ended with the appearance of bagpiper Karen May in Peter Maxwell Davies’ quirky piece, “An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise.” But that was topped by the encore: A surprise appearance by a dozen members of the Cincinnati Caledonian Pipes & Drum Band, who marched into the auditorium playing “Scotland the Brave.”

It was definitely the loudest moment in Preu’s Scottish-themed program. (Earplugs were offered to the audience in advance.) There were other rewards during the celebratory evening, including the debut of virtuoso violinist Angelo Xiang Yu in Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 3. In the end, the concert had two encores, several standing ovations and a sing-along of “Auld Lang Syne” by the audience of 430.
