It’s back! We are thrilled to announce the artists for this year’s installment of MusikArt – the visual interpretation of CCO music director Eckart Preu’s musical vision for the Summermusik festival season.

Holly Doan Spraul, owner and curator of Wash Park Art Gallery, has again expertly paired five Cincinnati artists with the upcoming season’s concert themes that most resonate with each artist’s style and passions. Artists have chosen instruments to be used as canvases to represent each of the four Mainstage concerts of Summermusik 2019, and a fifth to represent the entire festival.

All five instruments will be exhibited at Wash Park Art’s companion exhibit, again titled “Virtuosity,” along with other works by the seven featured artists. The exhibit will run July 26-October 13. A standard gallery exhibit opening will take place on Friday, July 26, 6-9pm.

All funds raised will go to support the artistic and educational programs of the Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra. After the instruments have been won by their successful bidders, the seven artist’s other works will still be on view and for sale at the gallery through October 13.

Auction Details

Bidding will start at $500 for each instrument, and bids will be taken until midnight, August 24, 2019.

Photos can be viewed and bids will be accepted online through The Velvet Cricket website, details COMING SOON. Bidding closes at midnight Aug. 24.

“Virtuosity” Opening Reception
JULY 26 | 6-9pm | Wash Park Art Gallery {OTR}

Meet the artists and get to know the CCO at the exhibit’s opening reception, Friday July 26.

EVAN HILDEBRANDT
Concert: August 3 | Visions of da Vinci | Cello

Visions of da Vinci, Summermusik’s opening night concert takes place August 3rd. Artist Evan Hildebrandt was paired with this concert because his work explores the science of the natural world through dramatic abstracts. Evan is also known for his use of contemporary media, ranging from repurposed construction products to rare imported pigments. Evan’s fine art is not limited to traditional grounds, rather he pulls it off the wall onto furniture and other practical applications in the interest of creating an environment.

CARIN AND ROBERT HEBENSTREIT
Concert: August 10 | Hidden Genius | 2 Violins

Carin and Robert Hebenstreit will collaborate to create an homage to Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn that pairs with Hidden Genius – the concert that will take place on August 10th. Carin’s renowned commission work includes the portraits of Paavo Jarvi and Max Rudolf at Music Hall and Bob is one of our region’s “Deans” of plein air painting. In addition to their art, they created a family of artists: son John is the sculptor commissioned for the bronze statue of Ezzard Charles, the centerpiece of its namesake’s west-end park; and, daughter Marlena is a frequently exhibited artist who recently completed a series on the life of Martin Luther King Jr.

TINA GUTIERREZ AND LARRY BROWN
Concert: August 17 | ESPAÑA | Guitar

For Summermusik’s ESPAÑA concert on August 17th photographic artist Tina Gutierrez and luthier Larry Brown are collaborating on a work that will represent Spain, Romero’s guitar, Tina’s hispanic background and Larry’s masterful understanding of the guitar structure. Tina’s impeccable fine art studio and underwater photography combines her study of classical art with an immediate relevance that pulls the viewer into a timeless experience. She has an innate understanding of the human form, its movement and how to express it through photographic composition. She is a favorite commercial photographer among performing artists, you no doubt have seen headshots and promos that she has photographed. In addition to her visual artistry, Tina is degreed in classical guitar and is a well-known lutenist. Larry is a master luthier, known internationally for his early music reproductions, frequently relying on period artworks to design instruments otherwise lost to time.

MARY BARR RHODES
Concert: August 24 | Blissful Mozart | Violin

To create a violin that would illuminate the Blissful Mozart concert on August 24th the CCO turned to artist Mary Barr Rhodes. Mary’s established career has journeyed from realism to her renowned dimensional abstractions extravagantly incorporating brilliant metal, glass and resin media in soulfully messaged works all based upon the unification of fractured and disparate media that summates a more beautiful reality. Mary immediately fastened on the spirit of this concert, identifying the “tension” between fracture and unification as elemental to the continuum of creativity.

ALISON SHEPARD
Inspiration | Summermusik Festival | Violin

The fifth instrument was presented to Alison Shepard, who had the task of creating a work of art that would represent Summermusik itself. Alison is known for her figurative work, bold florals and delicate wildlife depictions. Alison’s creations are keyed to an appreciation of natural cycles exemplified both in the exuberant beauty of her summer flowers and in her inspired embrace of the Shackleton Antarctic exploration, reckoning with the perils and possibilities of extreme winter.
